Program Description
Program
Family Health sponsors an elective to expose physician residents and medical
or allied health (physician assistant, nurse practitioner) students to
a rural family practice.
Requirements
-
Medical Students should have successfully completed an obstetrics rotation.

Interest in rural medicine.
Goals
To give students of family practice an experience in rural medicine which
will include the scope of geriatrics, trauma, pediatrics, general medicine,
occupational medicine, obstetrics and family planning. There will be an
opportunity to see patients in a variety of clinical settings which will
include the rural hospital, office setting, nursing home and private home
visits.
Objectives
-
The student will develop proficiency in the ability to obtain clinical
history, perform a physical exam and develop a treatment plan in an outpatient
setting.

Learn the strengths and weaknesses of a rural hospital.

Develop an ability to interact with various health organizations, such
as Health and Human Services, Home Health Organizations, and Hospice.

The resident will learn the special problems of patients who reside in
a rural area.
Housing
Can be provided for students and their family.
Duration
Two to four week time slots are available.
